Your Mac has a hidden recovery partition that contains a bootable copy of the operating system, allowing you to boot from it to reinstall macOS or check connected disks and external drives. This process is also known as booting into Recovery Mode.

Mac Recovery Mode is a troubleshooting tool that allows users to resolve critical system issues or restore data from a Time Machine backup, typically used as a last resort before seeking professional repair.

When the damage to a computer is severe, the recovery partition may also be affected, making it impossible to enter Recovery Mode. In such cases, the internet-based version of Recovery Mode, known as Internet Recovery, can be used as an alternative.

How to Enter Mac Internet Recovery

Internet Recovery is an internet-based version of Mac Recovery Mode that loads recovery tools from Apple's servers and can reinstall both the recovery partition and macOS, with the exact method of entering it varying between Macs with Apple Silicon and those with Intel processors.

Apple Silicon: Enter Internet Recovery

Step 1. To turn off your Mac, click the Apple menu and select Shut Down. This will immediately power down your device.

Step 2. Press and hold the Power key until you see the "Loading startup options" screen.

This will erase all data, applications, and settings, so be sure to back up any important files before proceeding.
